Partner Visas
820 Visa Processing Time 2026: What to Expect
Current Processing Times
As of early 2026, the Department of Home Affairs reports the following processing times for the Subclass 820 temporary partner visa:
- 75% of applications: 20 months
- 90% of applications: 27 months
These timeframes represent a significant improvement from the peak of 30+ months seen in 2023-2024.
Factors That Affect Processing Time
Several factors can influence how quickly your application is processed:
- Completeness of documentation — Incomplete applications are placed in a queue for further information requests
- Relationship evidence quality — Strong, well-organised evidence reduces assessment time
- Health and character checks — Delays in obtaining police clearances or medical results
- Country of origin — Some nationalities require additional security checks
Pro Tip
Lodge your application with ALL supporting documents from day one. Applications requiring additional information requests can add 3-6 months to your processing time.
What Happens While You Wait?
Once your application is lodged, you will receive a Bridging Visa A (BVA) that allows you to:
- Remain in Australia lawfully
- Work full-time
- Access Medicare
- Travel (with a Bridging Visa B)
Next Steps
If your application has exceeded the standard processing time, our team can assist with a status enquiry to the Department.
